Sliding Door Roller Replacement
Four wheels the size of a matchbox carry between 80 and 250 pounds of glass, two inches off the ground, in a channel that collects water and grit. When they fail — and on the coast they all eventually fail — everything above them starts failing too.
How to tell your rollers are gone
The noise comes first. A healthy door is nearly silent; a grinding or screeching sound means the wheel has stopped rotating and the steel housing is now dragging along the aluminium track.
Then the effort. If you need two hands, or a foot braced against the frame, the panel is no longer rolling — it is sliding. Then the geometry: a door that has dropped will show an uneven gap along the top rail, and the lock stops lining up with its keeper. The final stage is the panel lifting out of the channel entirely.
What we install
Original equipment rollers on most San Diego doors were steel-housed with nylon wheels — a design that fails predictably in coastal air. We replace them with sealed stainless assemblies with precision bearings, which cost a few dollars more per unit and last several times longer.
Adjustable-height assemblies matter as much as the material. They let us level the panel precisely inside the opening after fitting, which is what stops the new rollers wearing unevenly and puts the lock back in line with the keeper.
Why rollers alone are sometimes not enough
A seized roller does not fail quietly. As the housing drags, it cuts a groove into the soft aluminium of the track. Drop new rollers into that groove and they wear out fast, because they are now running in a channel that no longer has a flat surface.
This is why we assess the track on the same visit. If it is grooved, a stainless track cap goes over the top and the new rollers run on a fresh, hard surface. Skipping that step is the single most common reason a roller job fails inside two years.
Cost and timing
A standard two-panel patio door typically runs $185 to $325 including parts and labour, finished in one visit. Heavier doors — multi-panel systems, oversized glass, or commercial units — sit higher because the assemblies are larger and the panel handling needs two technicians.
Adding a stainless track cap to the same visit usually adds $90 to $180 and is almost always worth doing while the panel is already out.

How often do sliding door rollers need replacing?
It depends almost entirely on how far you live from the water. Homes in Coronado, Pacific Beach or Imperial Beach often need roller service every seven to ten years. Inland properties in Poway, Escondido or Santee frequently go 15 to 20 years on the original set.
Can I replace sliding door rollers myself?
The parts are inexpensive, but the panel is the problem. A standard patio door panel weighs 80 to 150 pounds of glass in an aluminium frame, and it has to come out of the opening and go back in without racking or dropping. Most DIY attempts we get called to have either cracked the glass or bent the frame.
Why is my door still hard to open after new rollers?
Three usual causes: the track underneath is grooved and was not capped, the frame is out of square so the panel binds at one corner, or the new rollers were not height-adjusted after fitting. All three are fixable, and all three are why we check the track and frame on every roller job.
Do you have rollers for my brand of door?
